I study art. What do you paint?

exam project, Art and Media

The Video "I Study Art. - What do You Paint?" by Anna Maysuk is an ironic commentary on how the art studies are still perceived today. The video work shows 12 subjects in one picture: they all are dressed the same, only the poses differ. Each subject is obviously the artist herself. The artist appears in another role. She stages a video lecture in which she talks about her own work with the words of renowned art historians, whilst providing the work with another level of self-reflection.

Anna has produced an artistic self-portrait in video format, in which she has accompanied her work at every stage: as an author, camerawoman, actress, an art critic, and, during the final presentation, as a curator of her own exhibition.

Painting is distinguished by the following artistic means of expression: colour, line, surface, composition, perspective, light and shadow, to name just a few. Which of these means can be transferred to the medium of video? Does the original painting (Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez, 1656)appear in the viewer's memory or does the setting remain unrecognizable?
